Beautifully presented, unusual hand-painted half plate Tintype portrait of a young woman by an unknown photographer. Matted in pleated blue and gold silk with a silver-colored metal (probably a nickel plating) retainer, and contained under glass in an elaborate handcrafted wooden frame, overall size ca. 13" x 7.25". Some wear to frame, and imperfections in glass, but the photograph itself is in fine condition. Tintypes are technically negatives, but since they are against a jet-black background, they appear as positive images, though laterally reversed, as when one looks in a mirror. Though rarely used for "art" photography, the process produced relatively crisp and especially durable images. Every aspect of the present image has been reinforced with the artist´s brush, creating a rare and striking work. Estimate US$ 400-500
