Spanish Civil War: International Brigade. Choice ALS "Steve Stevenson," in blue pencil , 4pp, 8vo, Albacete, Spain, 3/24/1937. He writes in awkward English, "My Dear Comrade Minor, This will come as a surprise to you I think having had lost track of me after that little loan I have made from you about a year ago. Well I still owed to you...unless I am bompt off...At any rate, the fact remains that at the moment...I am in the sunny romantic and glorious Spain. From the day I laid foot on the Spanish soil my pulse is hitting faster and faster, my enthusiasm is on the highest pitch...The joy...of the Spanish people, the welcome that we have received, is undescripable...Oh! it is gloriouse to leave into such an invironment Comrade Minor and it is more gloriouse to die for prevalence of such an invironment. This is the most wonderfull thing that ever hapened in all history. People of every shade, every belief and Nationality, from every corner of the Globe comming here for one single purpose, to sacrifice their own lives for the liberty and rights for a true democracy for all humanity...The American brigate is proving worthy of its mision, in disipline and in morale...The facist everywhere are in panic, and I think won´t be long now that they will be wipet out throughout Spain..." Age-toned, lightly soiled, otherwise in very good condition. In reality, things did not go well at all for the International Brigades, foreign volunteers who sought to assist Spain against the fascist revolution begun in July 1936. Generally they were not fully trained or equipped, and found themselves facing Spanish forces backed up by Italian and German troops and materiel. Estimate US$ 40-50
