American Revolution: Abraham Mortier English military official; paymaster general for British troops during the Revolutionary War; built the Richmond Hill estate in what was then the countryside north of New York City; it was the vice president´s house during Washington´s administration and was later purchased by Aaron Burr. DS "Abm. Mortier," 2/3p, 4to, NYC, 7/10/1771. He acknowledges receipt "of Isaac Bevan Esq:r Deputy Paymaster of His Majesty´s Forces at Boston, by the Hands of Messr. Thomas & William Apthorp, One Thousand Seven Hundred and Fourteen Dollars, and Sixteen Fifty sixth parts of a dollar, which...amounts to Four Hundred Pounds Sterling, being so much remitted..." for the maintenance of the troops through July and August.
