Asch, Sholem Polish-born American novelist and playwright, one of the leaders of the movement for Yiddish litrature (1880-1957). Great content ALS "Sholem and Mathilda Asch," [both in his hand] in Yiddish, 1p, 4to, Stamford, CT, 4/29/1945. He writes to Dr. Isador Held and his wife, clearly about the loss of their son in World WAr II: "A few days has passed since we heard of the great misfortune that has befallen you...It is difficult for me to find a word of comfort especially for a father and mother who have their own children on the field of battle...In the war with the worst enemy of mankind, we parents must be prepared to pay the highest price, as are our children. And we must...devote ourselves to the cause of America, Judaism (or Jewry) and all humanity. Your lost son on the field of battle will bring honor and resspect not only for himself and for you but for all the Jewish people..." Wrinkling and dampstain at upper left, otherwise VG.
