Union Passes: Quartet of interesting military passes. Includes ALS "Alfred Ely" as US Representative from NY, 1/2p, 4to, Rochester, 11/10/1862. He requests a pass for his friend, George Silliman. With approval ANSs by Brig. Genl. "J.H. Martindale" and Assistant Secretary of State "F.W. Seward." With NS "John Tucker / Asst. Sec. of War," 1/2p, 8vo, on engraved War Dept. stationery, Washington, 1/5/1862. He gives permission for W.W. Hawley to visit the Army of the Potomac. With ANS "Geo. Cadwalader / Major General," 1/2p, 8vo, Washington, 11/24/1862, allowing Mr. Edward Merritt, who also signs, to visit Virginia "for some purpose which he will explain." Finally, an interesting Forged [?] AN, signed as "B. Fowler, Lt. Col.," requesting that Pvt. Thomas Davy be permitted to go home to Brooklyn, NY, on furlough. However, the style of the request is suspiciously awkward, without the usual military brevity, and the signature is shaky, with strange stops and starts of the pen, along with evidence of pencil tracing! Adjutants docket and approve the pass on verso in the name of Maj. Gen. McClellan and Gen. McDowell. All VG. Estimate US$ 100-150
