Canada: "Hints on Emigration to Upper Canada." "Martin Doyle," [pseudonym of William. Hickey]. Dublin, Wiliam Curry, 1832. Second enlarged edition. 12mo, later black textured leather with gilt spine. Fold-out map intact, but foxed, otherwise interior pristine. Overall VG/F. Addressed specifically to "The middle and lower classes in Great Britain and Ireland". Hickey (1787-1875) was the son of a clergyman near Cork and the primary addressees of these hints are the Irish. The book is indeed full of practical suggestions to make the emigrant´s adventure easier and less hazardous: what food they should take for the journey, what things cost, what wages may be expected, what the social life is like, and what land costs. He was untiring in his assistance to the poor. A beautiful copy of this thoughtful work. Estimate US$ 300-400
