Slavery: Alcohol Offense Interesting DS by Eleanor Taylor [with her mark] and "James Barker," 1p, legal folio, Lumpkin County, GA, 8/23/1853. A bail bond on the pair "unto Howell Cobb Governor of the State of Georgia...in the first term of one Hundred dollars..." to appear in court in answer to "the offence of selling & furnishing a slave with spiritous Liquor..." Some toning at edges, otherwise VG. Cobb would become one of the founders of the Confederacy, and when the tide turned against the South, he strongly opposed the last-ditch effort to make soldiers of the slave population, arguing that "if slaves seem good soldiers, then our whole theory of slavery is wrong."
