The 48-star flag was introduced in 1912 and was used up until 1959, when Alaska and Hawaii became official states. This 47-year period makes it the second longest serving US flag, out of a total of 27 iterations. The adoption of this design in 1912 marked the first time a that a flag act specified an official arrangement of the stars in the canton. This specification named six rows of eight stars each, with each star having a point upwards.
