Charles I (1625-1649), Group B, Unite, 1627-1628, Tower (under King), second crowned and draped bust left, wearing ruff, value behind, rev. crowned shield, six strings to harp, 9.00g, 9h (Brooker 37-42; North 2148; S.2687), evidence of repair to edge at 8 o'clock, soft to face otherwise generally well-struck, especially so to obverse mint mark, with some lustre, very fine

Charles I's reign shaped early America largely through the fallout of his domestic policies rather than direct patronage. In 1625, Virginia became a royal colony after the Virginia Company's charter was revoked, placing it under direct Crown control. In 1632, Charles granted a charter to Cecil Calvert, Lord Baltimore, founding Maryland as a refuge for English Catholics. The colony was named after his queen Henrietta Maria.



More significantly, Charles's hostility toward Puritan reform drove the Great Migration of the 1630s, in which thousands of Puritans left England for New England. In 1629, Charles granted a charter to the Massachusetts Bay Company, and in 1630, John Winthrop led roughly a thousand settlers to found Boston and the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
