Spain played a foundational role in the European colonisation of the Americas, beginning with Christopher Columbus's voyages from 1492 onwards, which opened the way for Spanish conquest and settlement across the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, and much of South America.

Within the present-day United States, Spain founded St. Augustine, Florida, the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in the country, in 1565, and later expanded into the Southwest and California.



Spain's territorial claims and rivalries with England and France shaped numerous conflicts, including Queen Anne's War and the War of Jenkins' Ear. Spain briefly held Louisiana after 1762 before ceding it back to France in 1800, which then sold it to the United States in 1803. Spain's influence left a lasting imprint on American language, place names, architecture, religion, and law across the South and West, and it retained Florida until selling it to the United States in 1819.
