Karumamaya is another name of Matsyendranath, the patron deity of Patan. “Karunamaya Bungadya or Bungamati Avalokiteshvara is also called Karunamya Avalokiteshvara, the Boddhisattva of Compassion. His local Newar name is derived from the earlier form Bugama (or Bugma) Lokeshvara. Iconographically he is Padmapani, holding a lotus in his left hand and showing the boon-giving gesture with his right.
