Edward III (1327-1377), Third Period, Noble, authorised 30 July 1346 - May 1351, Tower (London), CD | WAR' : D' : GR'A : REX : AnGL : S : FRAnC : DnS : hyB [sic], small lettering with C for E in ED, double saltire stops, King standing in ship, brandishing long sword and Royal shield set with semé of four-and-a-half fleurs and two crescents in first quarter, ropes 3/2 with dexter line bisecting legend, quatrefoils 4/4, bow-sprit behind foc'sul, ornaments 11-11-11, leopards facing left, rev. :+: Ih'C : TRANSIEns : PER : MEDIVM : ILLORVM : IBAT, chevron-barred As, lombardic Ns and Ms, large lettering, double saltire stops, large E at centre of transitional floriate cross with detached "snail-like" calyces, later fleur-de-lys and recut didelphic filaments without anthers, [Spink XRF: .999 Fine], 35.5 x 35.7mm., 8.302g [128.12grns], 10h, i.m. broken cross formée (BM 2019 T450, no. 6 = PAS OXON-1AAA88, no. 623 this coin; Potter 1b, no. 8/- same obverse die; Stewartby 1/2; Edmund, dies Aa-6/bc-3 [1 Known]; North 1110; Spink 1481), subtly crimped across an otherwise full, round planchet, with superb mint bloom bathing key albeit not always struck-up devices, strictly a bolder very fine to extremely fine, yet much as struck with the progressive die flaw through portrait typical of this obverse puncheon, extremely rare, the reverse die previously unpublished
