1856 "Hidalgos"
Tampico. 1r. Yellow, two stamps, top and bottom margins just touching, tied to a cover from Tampico to Veracruz dated 1857 (December 3), with a spectacular "Paid at Tampico" (type CC1b) marking in red and a matching Tampico double-arc d.s. on reverse. Carried by the ship "Solent", the stamps paid the regular rate for more than 16 leagues for the Mexican portion, and 1 shilling to the British agency for the maritime section of the journey. Small damage due to ink acidity affecting a couple of letters. A very scarce and attractive exhibition item. Cert. B.P.A. (1989). Scott 2.
