1856 "Hidalgos"
Mexico District. 1r. yellow and 4r. red on cover to Veracruz dated 1857 (March 3rd). Stamps are cancelled with the very scarce oval "Administracion Gral. de Correos" and bearing "Por el extraordinario del paquete Ingles", indicating the express rate sent via the English packet. The express rate was double the normal rate, so in this period it would have been 4r. (less ½ ounce) or 6r. (½ ounce); instead, it paid 5r. beyond 16 leagues. Cover aging and minor tears. An exceptional rate. Cert. MEPSI (2026). Scott 2, 4.
