OD, large to very large margins all round, tied by a red Maltese Cross in an orange shade which leaves the Queen's profile almost clear, to entire letter from Leith to Thurso dated 30 May 1840; clean filing folds and a little soiled; fine. Rockoff & Jackson refer to two examples of the orange Maltese Cross used in May 1840. With K.a. Louis Certificate (2007) which mentions that the Maltese Cross in "slightly oxidised", this has now been de-oxidised
