Newspaper Tax Stamps
A collection of newspapers displaying a good range of the handstruck newspaper tax in red, with 18th century publications of Evening Post 1714 (by Rich: Bagg) with small London Bishop mark, 1715 and 1717, General Evening Post 1748, Westminster Journal 1755, Edinburgh Weekly Journal 1757, Whitehall Evening Post 1758, London Chronicle 1759, Caledonian Mercury 1779, Dublin Chronicle 1791, Morning Chronicle 1795, 1799 (2), London Gazette 1793, 1798 (4), Shrewsbury Chronicle 1798 plus various later including complete Illustrated London News with 1d. and printed value (5); these papers show the different rates from ½d. with ½d. increments to 3½d., 3½d. and 4d. Also Prices Courant 1851-58 showing 1d. handstamp (7), two uprated with 1d. adhesives. Also a few souvenir papers (5) including the sinking of the Titanic. Lindbergh flight (with Austria 50kr.), the other bearing Austrian or French adhesives. A most interesting collection.
