Brownish red: 1d. envelope, A133, 1840 (1 June) to Muirdrum, Forfarshire cancelled by a neat strike of this interesting coloured cross, the reverse with Monaghan despatch c.d.s. with Belfast and Edinburgh transit; there are a few faults around the black wax seal on the reverse and some minor stains and edge damage. With R.P.S. certificate (2022) which states "with oxidised red Maltese cross". Photo

This is the only recorded cover from Monaghan during the red Maltese Cross period. Although listed as purple-brown in Jackson's book, there are no supporting covers to confirm this as a distinct shade. This cover was previously offered in auction described as "in a maroon shade"
