Auction: 26015 - "The Treasure of the Eagles" Collection of Albania - Part I
Lot: 3073

(x) First Independent Albania (1912-1914)
Second Issue
1913 (Aug. 26). (1pi.) black, pair from the lower left corner of the sheet, with misplaced impression at left partly overstruck on the example at right, correctly paying the rate of a registered envelope from Qukës to Elbasan, tied on dispatch by violet c.d.s. (26.8.1913), receiving the c.d.s. on receipt on back for the same day. At most three examples are known of the largest multiple on cover; in addition, this represents the earliest recorded date for the sewing-machine stamps. Michel 2B.

note: The sources vary considerably in their comments on the sewing-machine stamps. Unlike most examples of the second issue, which were impressed on envelopes, the handstamp was applied to sheets of white paper with sewing-machine perforations. These are generally thought to have been issued in October 1913, with between 700 and 800 examples in sheets of 45, when the overprinted stamps of the third issue were running out and the stamps of later issues had not yet arrived. Nevertheless, examples of the sewing-machine issue have been found cancelled in September 1913, and, exceptionally, even in August in this case.
