Lot: 3024

(x) Austrian Albania (1797-1806; 1814-1918)
Cattaro
1833 (March 22). Incoming entire letter from Porto Rose on the north-eastern Adriatic coast to Budua (Budva) on the Montenegrin coast of “Austrian Albania”, routed through the port of Cattaro (Kotor), where it was disinfected. The reverse displays the extremely rare “del. mar. sanitaria i.r. del porto di cattaro” (“Imperial Royal Maritime Health Delegation of the Port of Kotor”) disinfection seal, applied on arrival (the only such disinfection seal used at this port). The contents include an exchange of information between the municipal administrations of the two ports under the Austrian Empire, regarding changes in ownership of some boats used to transport goods and passengers along the Adriatic Sea. To our knowledge, this is the only letter recorded exhibiting this disinfection seal.
