Göttlicher in Suiyuan to Abbot Jammes in Paris; without postal markings, the letter is headed "Mongolie 28 Juillet 1854" and gives a detailed account of his activities including, "The unrest in the 'Heavenly Empire' has hindered the further development of our charitable work for the past two years ... in a country like China the slightest occasion is sufficient, for the enemies of the Christians, to destroy in a single moment all that has been built with great effort ... Since 21 October we here at Si-wan ... baptised 180 children, most of whom are already in heaven...". The letter is annotated that it arrived on 11th April 1855. A rare early missionary letter. Photo
