Banco de España, Spain, [2 notes] a pair of hand-executed front and back essays for unissued 50 Pesetas, 19-- (ca. 1930s),

This stunning pair of essays features a wonderful portrait of Maria Bernaldo de Quirós (1898-1983), the first woman to receive a pilot's license in Spain.

After earning her licence in October 1928, De Quirós soon began participating in exhibitions across Spain. She rose quickly to public acclaim and received the military aviation insignia from the Royal Aero Club.

De Quirós is now known not only an icon of Spanish aviation, but her stark departure from the domestic sphere helped to establish her as an early proponent of gender reform in the country.
