South African Reserve Bank, South Africa, [2 notes] front and back essays for 1 Rand, ca (1960s), serial number C/1 000000,

This piece was produced during a significant period in the colonial history of South Africa. As stated on the Reserve Bank website, South Africa continued to use the British Coin system until 1961, when South Africa gained independence and became a republic. On 14th February 1961, the rand, replaced the pound and remained active until 1967. In 1961-65 we see the use of the 1 Rand in Pick 102-103. This essay, although similar to Pick 103, employs different design features, suggesting either a new adaptation of the existing design or a previous idea for what could have been the issued note.

The most striking difference in the issued notes by Bradbury Wilkinson & Co. is the significant variation in the portrait of Jan van Riebeeck. Riebeeck was a Dutch explorer and pioneer who played a significant role in the history of South Africa. He established a trading station on behalf of the Dutch East India Company, with the settlement later developing into Cape Town. What makes this essay particularly interesting is the side-profile portrait of Riebeeck, unlike the frontal view used on issued South African banknotes.
