Government of Gibraltar, [2 notes] hand-executed essays for proposed issue of 20 Pounds, ND (ca. 1977-1988),

An intriguing set mounted on card, providing a fascinating insight into the design process and evolution of Government of Gibraltar banknotes. Produced by Colin Roger Braun, a world banknote designer for Bradbury Wilkinson and Harrison & Sons. Braun began working for Bradbury in 1977 and Harrison's in 1987, suggesting that these designs may represent a proposed redesign or development of the existing 1975 20 Pound issue, which was ultimately not adopted.

Similarly to the previous lot, the design features a gate, this time 'Prince Edwards Gate', a fortification which was opened in 1790 fortification, which cuts through the Charles V Wall. An intriguing design which is unique in its composition and different from the 1975 issue featuring the parliament house. The most comparable design can be seen on the 5 Pound 1995 issue, featuring the Southport gates. The design also features Gibraltar's national bird, the Barbary Partridge, a particularly interesting detail given its resemblance to the bird imagery later featured on the 1995-2004 banknote issues.

The design is completed in colour pencil, with the example signature of Traynor in fine pen, which also appears on issued £10, £20 and £50 notes dated 1986. Mounted onto card and presented in a 'Harrison & Sons' presentation folder.
