Netherlands Trading Society, China, reverse proof for 5 Dollars,
1st of the 10th month in the 30th year of the Guangxu reign of the Great Qing Dynasty (1904), Shanghai issue design.

Founded in 1824, the Netherlands Trading Society established themselves as a bank in 1870 and opened a branch in Hong Kong in 1889. In 1903, it established its only Chinese office on Shanghai’s Bund. The circulation of NTS dollar notes remained relatively limited because Dutch law required banks to maintain substantial reserves against issued paper currency.
