Sir George Chetwynd (1783-1850) was an avid collector of tokens in his youth, but it was not until the Summer of 1830 that the idea of perfecting his collection was entertained. In 1831, he made arrangements with Matthew Young, the famous coin dealer to expand his cabinet.



In 1833, he issued a penny-sized token; followed in 1842 by the production of this Halfpenny token commemorating his family seat at Grendon Hall, Atherstone, Warwickshire.



In compliance with a specific direction contained in his will, Sir George Chetwynd's collection of Coins, Medals and Tokens, was sold at Christie's on July 23, 1872 and over the three following days., containing amongst other celebrated treasures - a Gold Proof of Wyon's lauded Gothic Crown, one of only two specimens struck.
