NGC AU58 | William I (1066-1087), 'Two Sceptres' Type, Penny, c. 1072-1074, London, Ælfwine, + PILLEM REX ANGLOI, crowned bust facing, flanked by sceptres, rev. + IELFPINE ON LVNDEI, cross fleury over cross botonnée with annulet at centre, 1.36g [20.99grns], 9h (Hawkins 237; Carlyon-Britton [1911], p. 74; SCBI -; North 844; BMC IV [Coll. no. 252 and Pl. IX, 9 same dies; S.1253), softer strike to portrait, nevertheless with most attractive fiery red-orange toning in recesses, very fine thus, and very rare, the only example traced from this die pairing in private hands and with an equally impressive provenance, in NGC holder, graded ALMOST UNCIRCULATED 58 (Cert. #8536752-008)
