NGC AU58 | Cnut 'the Great' (1016-1035/36), 'Quatrefoil' Type, Penny, c. 1017-1023, Salisbury, Ælfræd, + CNVT R•EX ANGL•ORVM : crowned and draped bust left, in quatrefoil, rev. + ÆLFRED ON SEARB, voided long cross in pellet-tipped quatrefoil, pellet at each apex, 1.45g [22.38grns], 9h (Hawkins 212; Lockett I, 724 = SCBI 20 [Mack], 1076 = EMC 1020.1076 this coin; North 781; BMC VIII; S.1157), a fine pedigree befitting a rich cabinet tone, good very fine, and presumed UNIQUE, being the only officially recorded specimen on EMC/SCBI and the earliest known coin struck for this moneyer at Old Sarum, in NGC holder, graded ALMOST UNCIRCULATED 58 (Cert. #8536752-001)
