Iron Age Britain, Atrebates and Regni, Verica (AD 10-40), AR Unit, 'Butting Bull' type, bull butting right, VERICA retrograde above, REX in exergue below, rev. figure standing left, holding palm frond and spear pointing downwards, [Spink XRF: 95.5% Ag], 1.310g, 2h (Cottam 164; BMC 1450-84; VA 506-1; S.137; ABC 1235), faint porosity, otherwise uniformly gunmetal toned overlying lustrous fields on an elliptical flan, a most attractive and good very fine, scarce, especially in this state!

Those with a penchant for ancient coins will recognise the 'butting bull' as derived from Augustus' iconic Lyon emission. No doubt some of these denarii made their way across the Channel and into the hands of the Atrebates and Regni die engravers.
