(x) Eadgar (959-975), Circumscription Cross, "Midlands Group" Penny, Ketill, + EADGAR RE MT, for "Totius Merciae", small cross pattée in centre, rev. + CEÐEL MONETV, small cross pattée in centre, 1.07g [16.51grns], 12h (SCBI -; CTCE -; BMC iii [Coll. no. -]; North 748; S.1134), almost universal edge loss, otherwise superbly uniform for strike, with a pleasing lustre and subtle tone, about extremely fine, a previously unrecorded moneyer, presumed UNIQUE, with a fascinating pedigree

Provenance

The Martin Waldron Collection of Anglo-Saxon, Norman and Plantagenet Coins

Baldwin 9, 7-8 October 1996, lot 1784* - "edge chipped but otherwise better than very fine and extremely rare, the moneyer not recorded at all in Coinage in Tenth Century England"

~"Found in discarded spoil from river dredging at Bath, 1973"~

Eadgar was crowned at Bath, on Pentecost in 973. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle relates: þær wæs blis micel on þam eadgan dæge eallum geworden, "there was much bliss on that happy day experienced by all". It is tantalising to speculate that this coin was lost in the jubilation that washed over the city.
