XXX, no. 23 = SCBI 30 [American], 386 = CTCE 158 this coin; BMC ig; North 756; S.1129 variety), deeply and colourfully cabinet toned across a nice round flan, a pleasing very fine, presumed UNIQUE and with a superb pedigree

Prior to consignment to auction in London, the Executors of Hollington Barker attempted to sell his numismatic cabinet and library to Matthew Boulton, as revealed in the following surviving letter from Birmingham City Council archives - "22 August 1802 - "Offer of sale. The executors of the late Mr. Barker present their respectl. Compts. to Matt. Boulton Esqr & inform him that the extensive & highly estimable collections of Coins and Medals, Prints, & Books of the late Mr. G H Barker are intended to be disposed of. Presuming upon the earnest anxiety which Mr. Boulton has ever expressed for the sciences and the literary & polished direction of his mind, and at the same time wishing that collections so entire may not be distributed into various hands, they take the liberty of offering him all or any of the collections.
The Executors will be much obliged by an answer, as early as Mr. B conveniently can. George Barker. Birmm. Augt. 22. 1802."
