(x) Danish East Anglia (c. 885-915), 'St Edmund Memorial Coinage', Penny, c. 895-915, the so-called "Prince Jesus" Type, East Anglian Mint, Principins [?], + SC EAIDI, A with Y-shaped bar in centre, rev. + PRINCIPINS, cross pattée in centre, 1.47g [22.69grns], 3h (Booth, SiEMC III [2014], pp. 162 = CNG 114, lot 1264; SCBI -; North 483; BMC -; S.960), colourfully toned with smoky hues, almost extremely fine, and OF THE HIGHEST RARITY, but two specimens known and with a putative early allusion to Christianity in the Danelaw

While the name Principius is known on the continent, Booth has suggested the possibility of a second reading. By splitting the reverse legend into two words, PRINCIP and IHS, 'prince' and the Christogram, it can conceivably be understood as a religious declaration 'to the Prince Jesus'.
