Chipping Norton Hoard, c.1980



The Chipping Norton hoard of James I gold coins was discovered around 1980 in Oxfordshire, during excavations for a new building’s foundations. A collapse in the ground revealed a long-forgotten cellar, where the coins were found tucked behind a large stone in the wall.



The complete hoard comprised 54 English and 5 Scottish coins. Declared Treasure Trove in 2005, it was examined and catalogued by the British Museum, which acquired two coins for the National Collection. The remainder of the hoard was returned to the finders.
