John Kelly was born at Borrisokane, County Tipperary, Ireland and was previously a hosier before he enlisted into the 22nd Foot on 19 September 1839 (No.1480). He served in the East Indies from 21 May 1841 and was present at the Battle of Meenaee on 17 February 1843 and the Battle of Hyderabad on 24 March 1843, Kelly was invalided to England on 20 January 1844 and completed his first posting to the East Indies on 13 May 1844. He was firstly based at Chatham before being sent to London on 9 November 1844 as a recruiter and alternated between London and Chatham. Kelly then served in the East Indies for a second time from 23 November 1850 and was sent to the North West Frontier. He was present at the taking and destruction of the villages in the Boree Valley in the Peshawar District under Brigadier J. T. Boileau on 29 November 1853 as Deputy Provost Marshal. Kelly was awarded his Meritorious Service Medal in 1856. He transferred to the Military Train on 1 March 1857 and with regimental number changed to 1373. He was pensioned on 13 October 1863 and in 1871 was appointed to the Yeomen of the Guard, with whom he was awarded the 1887 Jubilee Medal in bronze. He died at 22 Endlesham Road, London on 3 November 1895, having suffered from Gout for 30 years. A scarce combination of medals and likely unique.
