D.C.M. London Gazette 28 March 1918.

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When the enemy opened a heavy bombardment during a relief he repeatedly went out into the pen under intense fire to assist the relieving troops in finding their positions. He showed the greatest coolness, courage, and initiative, and was the means of preventing many casualties.'

Daniel Carroll was born in Tynemouth, Northumberland in 1882 to Daniel and Catherine Carroll. He enlisted at 18 years old in February 1900 and served with the 4th Battalion, Rifle Brigade during the Boer War before then transferring to the Army Reserve in April 1903. He then re-engaged in January 1912 and subsequently served in the Great War with the 3rd Battalion, disembarking on the Western Front on 10 September 1914. Five months later, Carroll was wounded with a gunshot wound to the left leg and was sent to the hospital ship Asturias. He later transferred to the 7th Battalion in September 1915, this latter one being the one with which he was awarded his D.C.M. for his actions at Passchendaele Ridge.

At the very end of the war Carroll was reported missing and it was not until 16 September 1918 that he was reported prisoner of war. He was held at Giessen Camp until he finally arrived back in England on 17 December 1918.
