Herbert Cecil Saunders was born in Brighton on 19 April 1880 to Edith Lydia Beckley and Augustus Beckley and was educated at Brighton Grammar School. He enlisted into the Royal Engineers, Territorial Force in January 1904 and was subsequently promoted Captain in January 1908, Major in June 1916 and Lieutenant-Colonel in January 1919. Upon the outbreak of the Great War, Saunders enlisted on 17 January 1915 and disembarked in France. Later, he transferred to Salonika and was subsequently awarded the Greek War Cross.
