(x) Defence of Jellalabad 1842, Second 'Flying Victory' type (William Nicholl, 13th Regiment.), engraved naming, silver clip and suspension bar, very fine
774 men of the 13th Light Infantry were awarded the 1st Type Defence of Jellalabad Medal and of these approximately 50 exchanged them for the 2nd Type (British Battles and Medals, pp. 216-17 refers). Most of these 2nd Types had impressed naming but varieties of naming exist.
The conduct of the 13th Foot was officially rewarded in August 1842 when Prince Albert offered his patronage to the Regiment and permitted his name to be used in it title, thus becoming the 13th (1st Somersetshire) (Prince Albert's Light Infantry) Regiment of Foot.
