The South Africa Medal awarded to Private G. Morris, 1st Battalion 24th (The 2nd Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot, who was killed in action at the disastrous Battle of Isandhlwana on 22 January 1879
South Africa 1877-79, 1 clasp, 1877-8-9 (610, Pte. G. Morris, 1/24th. Foot), silver brooch mount affixed to reverse, very fine
The published Medal Roll notes entitlement to the clasp '1879' only, though the medal here appears exactly as issued and upon an original length of silk riband.
George Morris enlisted at Brecon on 21 June 1875, aged 21, and upon official notification of his death his mother - Jane Morris - claimed his effects, worth £9-13-2. 'The Noble 24th - Biographical Records of the 24th Regiment in the Zulu War and the South African Campaigns 1877-1879' also notes that: 'a number of his letters are in the Regimental Archive'.
