The Military General Service Medal awarded to Corporal F. Ernst, 2nd Light Battalion, King's German Legion, who was wounded at Valladolid

Military General Service 1793-1814, 6 clasps, Albuhera, Salamanca, Vittoria, St. Sebastian, Nivelle, Nive (Friederich Ernst, Corpl. 2nd Lt. Bn. K.G.L.), carriage reconstituted, nearly very fine

Ex-R.W. Gould, M.B.E. collection of Napoleonic War Medals.

Friederich Ernst was born at Adelysen in the Kingdom of Hanover in 1788. He enlisted on 23 January 1806 and was discharged on 24 February 1816, aged 28, after 9 years 32 days as a private and one year as a corporal, and was further entitled to two years' service for Waterloo.

Ernst is listed in his pension documents as severely wounded in the left leg at Valladolid, Spain. The British Army passed that way after their withdrawal from Burgos and saw action there during the manoeuvring which culminated in the Battle of Salamanca. This information was extracted from his Pension document, signed and sealed at Steyerberg, 24 February 1816, by Lieutenant-Colonel George Baring (TNA 122/2 - document too frail to be copied); sold together with copied medal roll and research.
