Military General Service 1793-1814, 3 clasps, Corunna, Salamanca, Toulouse (Thos. Darlison, 36th Foot), edge bruise, otherwise good very fine
Ex-John Darwent Collection, April 2004.
Thomas Darlison is confirmed upon the Medal Roll and is one of only two men of the 36th Foot to claim this number and combination of clasps. Darlison enlisted into the 2nd Battalion, 36th (Herefordshire) Regiment of Foot from the Warwick Militia on 2 September 1807. After transferring to the 1st Battalion in July 1808, he served at the Battle of Corunna (16 January 1809) and on the Walcheren Expedition, from where (like many thousands of men who participated in that abortive campaign) he was invalided home sick and admitted to Haslar Hospital - indeed, the 36th alone lost more than 200 men to malaria.
Returning to the Iberian Peninsula in 1811, the battalion (with a recovered Darlison in their ranks) fought at the battles of Salamanca and Toulouse. Being sent to Ireland at the conclusion of the war, Darlison was discharged at Birr on 8 November 1814, having completed seven years' service; sold together with copied research.
