Naval General Service 1793-1840, 2 clasps, 4 Novr 1805, Basque Roads 1809 (John Croxton.), plugged at 6 o'clock, otherwise good very fine

Provenance:
Sotheby's, March 1980.
Glendining's, March 1988.

John Croxton is confirmed upon the Medal Roll with correct entitlement to these two clasps, the first as a Boy aboard the 90 (later 74)-gun H.M.S. Namur and the second as a Landsman on the 74-gun H.M.S. Valiant. The action of 4 November 1805 (otherwise known as the Battle of Cape Ortegal or 'Strachan's Action') was the final engagement of the Trafalgar campaign, where a large Royal Navy squadron (comprising four ships of the line and four frigates) commanded by Captain Sir Richard Strachan encountered four French ships of the line - commanded by Admiral Pierre Dumanoir le Pelley - which had successfully escaped the defeat at Trafalgar on 21 October. After fierce fighting and manoeuvring over several hours all four enemy vessels were overwhelmed, with Namur taking on and capturing Pelley's flagship, Formidable.
