A REMARKABLE COVER ADDRESSED TO QUEEN VICTORIA

Cover from Concord addressed to "Victoria, Queen, Great Britain", 1860 (27 Aug.) bearing United States 1857-1861 issue 1c. Type V (2), 3c. Type II (2) and 10c. Type V pair and two singles all cancelled by barred circle handstamps and with London d.s. on reverse.
A beautiful three colour franking and a highly desirable item of both historic and philatelic importance.

During 1860, Queen Victoria was represented by her son, Albert Edward, the Prince of Wales, on a royal tour of Canada, while the Queen remained in the United Kingdom. The Prince visited St. John’s, Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and the Province of Canada, where he was showered with gifts, including a Newfoundland dog, and honoured with grand royal receptions. The Prince also visited the United States during his journey.

This extraordinary cover, addressed directly to Queen Victoria, serves as a tangible link to this historic royal tour. While the original contents are no longer present, they may well have included reports on the Prince’s travels and experiences for the Queen, making this piece both historically and philatelically remarkable.
