(x) The Royal Bank of Scotland plc, Scotland, Unissued pair of Front and Back essays on card for £1, 4th January 1987, serial number A/11 000000,
A Rare Pre-Issuance Essay Set Featuring Both Front and Back Designs with Unused Signature

This exceptional pre-issuance essay set, dated 4th of January 1987, features the exact front and back designs which would later be approved and adopted for circulation beginning on the 25th March 1987. The front and back are printed separately, reflecting a stage when the note’s final appearance was nearing approval.

It is important to highlight that the essays in this lot bear the signature of Chief Executive Charles Winter, whereas the first issued notes for circulation were signed by Managing Director Maiden. This distinction is significant.

The first series of the Campbell Issues, dated 25th March 1987, were signed by the Managing Director. Later, a second series of Campbell Issues was issued on 13th December 1988, and these notes bear the signature of the Chief Executive—not Winter, but Maiden—who succeeded him.

Charles Winter served as Chief Executive of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group from 1985 to 1992, following a distinguished career that began in 1949. He played a key role in a period of major transformation, including the integration of Williams & Glyn’s Bank and the expansion into international markets.

This essay set, combining an early date, a finalised design, and the signature of a high-ranking official whose signature is not found on this design’s issued notes, offers a rare and fascinating insight into the note production process and leadership transitions during a pivotal moment in the bank’s history.
