Western Bank of Scotland, collection of proof notes, 1832-1857, featuring an original watercolour proof, a folder containing proofs of notes engraved by W. H. Lizars, Edinburgh, and subsequently issued by the Western Bank of Scotland.
An original hand-drawn and watercolour proof £1 by W. H. Lizars in exceptional condition, along with two proof £1 notes, Glasgow, ND (1832-40), no serial numbers, some minor stains and water damage, in one case extending from the outer margins to the upper right corner of the note itself, otherwise good very fine (PMS WE1),
three proof £5 notes, Glasgow, ND (1832-40), two in full detail, the other less elaborate, no serial numbers, some minor stains and minor water damage to one corner, otherwise extremely fine (PMS WE 2),
three proof £20 notes, Glasgow, ND (1832-40), two in full detail, the other less elaborate, no serial numbers, about extremely fine (PMS WE4),
two additional proof £20 notes in an envelope with handwritten information regarding the production of the notes,
an original watercolour and hand-drawn proof £100, with two alternative partial designs, neither of which were issued, minor stains, otherwise extremely fine,
also within the folder are proof £5 & £10 notes for the North of England Joint Stock Exchange, and a specimen £20 note for the Commercial Bank of Scotland, also using plates by W. H. Lizars, as well as a handwritten letter from a partner of the Western Bank of Scotland addressed to its directors, requesting the circulation of banknotes, dated 26th October 1832, three months after it began business.
The folder also features a lithograph print, in the style of Lizars, of Whitehill House in 1866, a Glasgow property owned at the time by noted bank director Alexander Dennistoun.
A note on the front of the folder lists "all the notes", £100, £20, £10, £5 & £1, however there is no £10 proof included.
