William Thomas Payne-Gallwey (1881-1914) was educated at Eton College before being commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 4th (Hallamshire) Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment, in February 1900. Transferring into the Grenadier Guards in August the same year, he served in South Africa during the Anglo-Boer War and was made Member of the Royal Victorian Order (M.V.O.) in June 1908. A first-class cricketer and member of the Marylebone Cricket Club, he played for the British Army cricket team and was especially known as a right-arm fast bowler.
Serving with the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards on the Western Front, he was reported missing in action in 1914 and confirmed killed on 14 September that year; having no known grave, he is commemorated on the La Ferte-sous-Jouarre memorial, France.
