(x) Salvation Army

The Order of Long Service, in silver and enamel, hallmarked for Birmingham 1952 (To Major John Hugh from General Albert Orsborn 7.5.1953) engraved on reverse, mounted for wear, good very fine

John Hush along with his wife Rachel, served in the Christian Ministry first in Blackfriars, London, they married in 1932. Then they were in charge of the hostel at 240 Bute Street, Cardiff which was opened in 1935 as Captains in the Salvation Army, the hostel accommodated 120 old aged male pensioners and was acquired from Spillers Limited. Hush and his wife already had experience in other seaport towns. They were in retirement homes in Birmingham during World War Two and later in Northen Ireland. His Cross was given to him by Albert Orsborn, who was the 6th General of The Salvation Army for the period 1946-54. He retired in 1963 and died in 1966. His wife Rachel died over 40 years later aged 107 on 28 December 2010, being the oldest retired Salvation Officer.

Perhaps an unusual example where the Cross was engraved from the 'General' of the Salvation Army.
