George William Lawrence Young was born at Colchester in September 1871, the son of Lieutenant-Colonel Richard Young. The younger Young went to the Royal Naval College and was made a Lieutenant in the Royal Marines in September 1891, his name being removed from the list of officers the following February.

With the outbreak of the Boer War, he enlisted at King William's Town (now Qonce), Eastern Cape, South Africa on 23 February 1896, aged 24. A less than model soldier, he was in trouble with the authorities early on in his military career, with charges of Trespass and Assault on 22 April 1897. This followed with bouts of being Drunk on ten separate occasions along with two separate charges of Absent, he was admonished on several charges and was demoted from Lance-Corporal to Private.

Young was wounded slightly on 9 April 1900 at Jammersburg Drift and was taken captive at Senekal on 16 May 1900. On that day, Lieutenant J. M. P. Bowker, Eastern Province Horse, led a patrol of twelve men under a white flag into the town with Lord Roberts' proclamation. They were met by a party of Boers who, ignoring the white flag, made them prisoners. Young was released on 27 June 1900.

He was discharged on 30 June 1903. His entry on the Q.S.A. roll firstly notes 'Black List' and notes that he is denied a Wepener clasp with the medal being issued on 16 September 1904, the forfeiture of the Wepener clasp also appears on his service/charge sheet, whilst his entry for the K.S.A. again notes 'Black List' the medal was issued in February 1905.

Young returned to the fold during the Great War and served with the Royal Marines.
