Imp: Yeo:) wire joining first and second clasps; King's South Africa 1901-02, 2 clasps, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902 (46 Corpl: F. C. Nicholls. Imp: Lt Horse), light contact marks, otherwise very fine (2)

Frederick Charles Nicholls was born at Gorran, St. Austell, Cornwall, on 12 March 1878 and was a Carpenter by trade. He attested at London into the Imperial Yeomanry on 1 May 1900. Nicholls was discharged to the Army Reserve on 30 November 1900 having been permitted to join the Imperial Light Horse (Authority Cape Town Base Orders 838 26/11/00). Nicholls attested at Cape Town on 1 December 1900 into the 2nd Imperial Light Horse. He was discharged on 17 February 1902 at Maritzburg, Natal, South Africa and was to return to England. His London address was given as 30 Winchendon Road, Fulham, London. He was married to Sarah Jane Mellor on 26 December 1906. Nicholls died at Liverpool on 20 July 1948 and is buried in the family grave at Liverpool Cemetery, Anfield.

Mr Dear Father

Glad to hear you are all well as it leaves me. We have been having two or three days rest since I wrote last. We have been after De Wett (sic). We did 120 miles in three days. We went to tackle him at his laager but when we got there it (sic) was gone so we came back & met him this side of Bethlehem at a place called Elandsburg & had a nice scrap with him. G Squad was support to the advance guard. We were about 2 (sic) his out of Bethlehem when the ball was opened about 2 or 300 charged the Right advance party it was a grand sight they came out of a large Donja like a swarm of bees & then they opened out it was grand the way they did it. We had about 200 tackling us a."
