An Egypt 1882-89 Pair awarded to Private H. Dawson, Royal Berkshire Regiment, who after serving in the Egyptian campaign saw further service in the Second Boer War where he was severely wounded at the Battle of Silkaatsnek on 2 August 1900, where in the same action Private W. House won the V.C. for bringing in a wounded Sergeant, Dawson re-enlisted again for the Great War serving in the Royal Defence Corps

Henry Dawson was born at Windsor and having served in the Berkshire Militia, as well as working as a labourer, enlisted at Reading on 10 July 1884. He saw service in Egypt between 5 October 1885 - 31 May 1886 when he then saw service in Cyprus between 1 June 1886 - 2 February 1888 and further service in Malta between 3 February 1888 - 10 April 1892. He served at Home between 11 April 1892 - 5 June 1900. Dawson then served in South Africa between 6 June 1900 - 2 January 1901, during this period he was severely wounded on 2 August 1900 as a result of a gunshot wound through the joint of the 3rd finger, both thighs and his left arm at the Battle of Silkaatsnek. He returned Home on 3 January 1901 until he was discharged as a result of being invalided from the service on 12 May 1901. With the outbreak of the Great War, he attested into the 4th Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment on 7 June 1915 at the age of 50. He transferred to the Royal Defence Corps (9280) on 29 April 1916. Dawson served at Home until 20 December 1917 before serving in France between 21 December 1917 - 2 January 1918 carrying out the role of Escort Duty of POWs. He returned Home on 3 January 1918 and was discharged as a result of sickness on 26 February 1918.

Dawson is further entitled to a Queen's South Africa 1899-1902 with clasps Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal; British War Medal 1914-20 (sole Great War entitlement) and a Silver War Badge (368910).

His Q.S.A. was offered for sale at auction in 2021.
