Distinguished Conduct Medal, G.V.R. (15755 Sjt: A. W. Godfrey. 287/Sge: By: R.G.A.); British War and Victory Medals (15755 Sjt. A. W. Godfrey. R.A.), very fine (3)

D.C.M. London Gazette 28 March 1918, the original citation states:

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. The battery position was shelled by heavy guns, and before one of the dug-outs could be cleared, two enemy shells fell close by it, causing several casualties. He, having seen his own detachment clear, returned alone, found the dug-out blown in, and men imprisoned within. Despite the increased violence of the hostile fire, he, single-handed, freed two of the buried men, rallied a party to rescue the third man, and then carried all three into safety. Throughout his service with the battery he has repeatedly shown great initiative, and his personal courage has been of the highest order.'

287th Siege Battery was equipped with 6 inch Howitzers and served as part of 22nd Heavy Artillery Group alongside 182, 253 & 265 Siege Batteries.
