The Royal Irish Regiment was amalgamated with the Ulster Defence Regiment in 1992. The 1st and 2nd Battalions were general service battalions; the 3rd-9th Battalions (Home Service battalions), permanently based in Northern Ireland and filled the roll formerly occupied by the U.D.R. in combatting terrorism; sold together with copied research.
